What I Believe

As a four-year-old, I learned the words to the song “Jesus Loves Me” in Sunday school. As a middle schooler, I attended Confirmation classes every Wednesday afternoon for three years. At the time, it seemed like punishment for being from a Christian family. It was only years later that I understood and appreciated how those classes laid the foundation of my faith and core beliefs that I have held fast to throughout my life. My statement of belief comes from the Apostle’s Creed, which was imprinted on my heart and soul as a young girl.

This is what I believe…

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting. Amen.
